At ProLogis, we believe that in order to be successful, sustainability needs to be a bottom-up as well as a top-down approach. That is why in addition to developing a number of initiatives at the corporate level, we’ve tapped into the energy of our associates throughout the organization. In early 2008, every U.S. office identified at least one Sustainability Champion in an effort to advance three goals: 1) to elevate awareness of sustainability within the company, 2) to streamline communication and data sharing about our sustainability activities, and 3) to help improve the environmental performance of our operations. These individuals participate in quarterly conference calls to discuss current efforts, share best practices and learn from one another.
For example, when the group first formed in early 2008, each Sustainability Champion identified at least one action his or her office could take to reduce its environmental impact during the year. The Champions then formed into four teams focusing on the major impacts of ProLogis’ internal operations: Waste, Energy, Procurement, and Water. Each team brainstormed action items our offices should complete in these areas. The assembled list is called our Green Path – our standard and road map for greening internal operations. In early 2009, the Green Path will be officially launched, and the Sustainability Champion program will be rolled out in Europe. Sustainability Champions will be identified in Asia in late 2009.
This program allows our associates to become an integral part of our sustainability program and encourages the sharing of information and lessons learned. We are excited to continue this important initiative.
