ProLogis is at the forefront of innovation for incorporating renewable energy with distribution facilities, having implemented several cutting-edge wind and solar installations around the globe totaling 6.8 megawatts of generation capacity. Highlights of these projects are as follows.
Europe:
- ProLogis Parks Malsch in Germany (550 kW) and Chanteloup in France (446 kW) represent large-scale solar installations that benchmark best practices for renewable energy generation in their respective countries.
- ProLogis Park Penedes in Spain (105 kW) and Sorgues in France (235 kW) represent smaller-scale solar installations that directly benefit the building occupants as well as participate in national programs.
Asia:
Strong, sustained winds along Japan’s densely populated coastlines create ideal conditions for wind-based power systems. ProLogis has integrated wind turbines at three large distribution centers:
- ProLogis Parc Amagasaki - two 10 kW turbines
- ProLogis Parc Osaka II – two 4 kW turbines
- ProLogis Parc Centrair – four 10 kW roof-mounted turbines
In addition, ProLogis is installing its first photovoltaic system in Japan on the roof of ProLogis Parc Zama I. The 1-megawatt system will provide power for lighting the common area and the entire 1.2 million square feet (113,000 square meters) of warehouse space. Completion is expected in the second quarter of 2009.
North America:
- In March 2008, ProLogis embarked upon a landmark agreement with Southern California Edison, one of the largest utilities in the United States, to lease 607,000 square feet of roof space on its Kaiser Distribution Center #7 for the installation of solar panels. The potential energy generation of 2.4 megawatts is enough to power 1,300 households for a year.
- In October 2008, ProLogis contracted a rooftop lease agreement with Portland General Electric (Oregon, United States) to install 1.1 megawatts of thin-film solar panels on three buildings in ProLogis Park PDX and Corporate Center East.
As breakthroughs in renewable energy occur, ProLogis will remain at the forefront of applying these technologies to industrial real estate.
